The sphygmograph is an ingenious instrument with whichto note the varieties of pulse, which is often of importancein making both the diagnosis and prognosis of disease. The instrument is sodelicately constructedthat the slightest irregu-larity of the pulse isnoted by it, and made amatter of record, as isseen in the sliding pieceof smoked glass seen inthe top of the cut. Bymeans of a spring inthe wheel this smokedpiece of glass is pro-pelled evenly, while anindex needle traces thethrobbing of the pulsewith exactness. Withits use we can discoveran irregularity of theFig. No. 14.—Sphygmograth. pulse which we could not detect by the sense of feeling. This may give us importantinformation regarding the hearts action, as well as the con-dition of the blood vessels, and in some instances may throw light upon the diagnosis of nervous diseases also. 11
