In some instances thespine may he bent laterally into one long curve, total scoliosis(Fig. 80). This is probably, in many instances at least, theinitial stage of the ordinary type of scoliosis, the long curve beingafterward divided, although it may persist. In childhood totalscoliosis is often combined with general posterior curvature, andit is peculiar in that the torsion of the vertebrse may be towardthe concave instead of the convex side, as is usual, the torsionrepresenting probably the early stages of the secondary or com-pensatory curve.
