pimples of lichen oftenadvance and swell into veritable tubercles; and both, thatis, the lichen and the tubercle, are preceded by a roseolous orerythematous condition of the derma. The tubercles may be crowned with a scab upon their sum-mits when the patient first presents himself for medical aid, orthey may be without this covering. Many specimens are dry,and almost hard to the touch ; others impart a sensation ofmoisture to the finger ; they are often slightly elastic, and yieldunder gentle pressure. At one time they are perfectly indolent,and remain for weeks or months without perceptible change.At another time they will be transformed with great rapidity intosloughing ulcers, and spread over large portions of skin in ashort period. In feeble and anaemic patients the skin seems, asit were, to dissolve and melt away under this morbid process, ina manner truly frightful, especially when the disease is seatedon the forehead, which is one of its favorite localities.
