gruous masonry ; above the porch, a wall of peb-bles from the Gave, and of red bricks crossed like atapestry design ; opposite, fixed to the wall, a rowof medallions in stone ; upon the sides, doors ofevery form and age; dormer windows, windowssquare, pointed, embattled, with stone mullionsgarlanded with elaborate reliefs. This masqueradeof styles troubles the mind, yet not unpleasantly ; itis unpretending and artless ; each century hasbuilt according to its own fancy, without concerningitself about its neighbor. On the first floor is shown a s^reat tortoise-shell,which was the cradle of Henry IV. Carved chests,dressing-tables, tapestries, clocks of that day, thebed and arm-chair of Jeanne dAlbret, a completeset of furniture in the taste of the Renaissancestriking and sombre, painfully labored yet magnifi-cent in style, carrying the mind at once backtoward that age of force and effort, of boldness ininvention, of unbridled pleasures and terrible toil,of sensuality and of heroism.
