Edingdon, or Hedington, appears to havebeen a Roman station, by foundations of 84 SURVEY OF THE GREAT ROAD FROM houses dug up for a mile together, andmany silver and copper imperial coins foundthere: some of which are in the Ashmoleanmuseum, and others in that of the RoyalSociety. DEVIZES. This is an ancient town, eighty-ninemiles distant from London, and twenty-four from Salisbury; respecting the nameand origin of which there have been va-rious opinions. It is called by Mathew of WestminsterVisa, by Leland the Vies, and supposed tohave taken its name from the division of itbetween the King and the Bishop of Salis-bury ; or, as Dr. Stukeley fancies, from thelast syllable of the Roman name Punc-tuobice. Here stood a strong castle, no remains ofwhich are now to be seen.—Dr. Walker, inhis notes on Spelmans Life of Alfred, on theauthority of tradition, ascribes the castle ofDevizes to him; but the earliest accountwe have of it from history is, that it wasthe work of Roger, Bishop of Sarum.
