CLIFTON. This village stands in Gloucestershire,about a mile west of the city of Bristol,delightfully situated upon the southern de-clivity of a high hill extending to the riverAvon. From the pleasantness of its situa-tion, and the salubrity of the air, manypersons of fortune have been induced tofix their general residence in it. On the downs beyond Clifton, a largeplot of ground has been laid out for build-ing, and, as I am informed, several streetsare to be erected there, in an elegant style. In the lower town is a parade, a square,and other handsome buildings, which, to-gether with many elegant houses on thehigher ground, are genteely fitted up forthe accommodation of strangers resortinghither, either for pleasure or for health. There are two public assembly-rooms atClifton, styled the Upper and Lower, whereassemblies and balls are held, and publicbreakfasts, &c. are given, in imitation ofthose of Bath, but on a smaller scale.
