VOL. II. L 146 SURVEY OF THE GREAT ROAD FROM tended. This structure was designed by-Mr. Baldwin, architect, and erected underhis direction. There are two bridges over the Avon, atBath. The New Bridge, before mentioned,leading to Bath wick ; and the Bridge of St.Laurence, at the end of Horse Street, at thesouthern extremity of the town. The former of these is an elegant, levelstone bridge, of three arches, built by Mr.Pulteney, from a design of the late Mr. Ro-bert Adam. The superstructure is com-posed of a range of regular buildings oneach side, converted into shops, like theRialto, at Venice; and, as we approach it,has the appearance of a handsome street. The other bridge consists of five semi-circular arches ; and though of a handsomeappearance, is by no means of sufficient con-sequence to form a principal entrance intothe city of Bath: but the streets to whichit immediately leads, and others adjoiningthereto, being in themselves contracted andmean, may in some degree apologize for

LONDON TO BATH AND BRISTOL. 147 the want of space and magnificence in thisstructure. Bath is governed by a mayor, recorder, al-dermen, twentycortimon-council, and a town-clerk ; sends two members to parliament;and is the see of a bishop, in conjunctionwith Wells. The number of aldermen, outof which the mayor and two justices arechosen, is not to exceed ten, or be less thanfour: and out of the common-council areyearly elected two bailiffs, or sheriffs, andtwo constables. The senior of the common-council is always the chamberjain. A court of record is held at the Town-hallevery Monday, which has cognizance of allpersonal actions within the city, or its li-mits, in case the debt or damages exceed oramount to forty shillings.—There is also acourt of requests, for the more easy andspeedy recovery of small debts, under fortyshillings. The principal markets are held on Wed-nesdays and Fridays, and are most plentifullysupplied with excellent provisions of every 148 SURVEY OF THE GREAT ROAD
