y bishopBingham in 1245, which brought the greatwestern road this way, to the detriment ofWilton. In the city stood a house of GreyFriars. Trinity-hospital, founded in thereign of Richard II. is still in being,and maintains a master and 12 poor men.In the N.E. part of the city is the church ofSt. Edmund, which was formerly collegiate.The church of St. Thomas was built bybishop Bingham as a chapel of ease to thecathedral, and contains several handsomemonuments ; it is ornamented with a well-adorned tower, in which are eight bells,with chimes. St. Martins church consistsof a nave, two aisles, a chancel, and a towerat the west end, supporting a spire. TheInfirmary is in the adjoining parish ofFish-erton, and is a large brick building. Inthe city are also mi.ny hospitals, alms-bouses, and other charitable foundations,which afford asylums to the aged and in-firm, and provide for the education of theinfant poor; besides which, there are twofree grammar-schools of very considerable FlateXXX.

In the S.E. cornerstands the council-house, began in 1788.This magnificent structure stands on thesite of the old Guildhall, is was erected atthe expense of the earl of Radnor, andcompleted in 1795. It is a square buildingof white brick, with a grand doric portico,forming a noble facade, at the principalentrance, on the north, leading to thetwo courts of law. It consists of only onefloor, on which are the two courts, a coun-cil-room, a grand jury-room, and severalapartments for the offices of the corpora-tion. In the courts (occupying the wholeof the left wing) the assizes and the ses-sions, of the peace are held for the city,county, and close.
