It was during the reign of MorganHen that a question arose, whether the tribute of thepetty princes of South Wales should be paid to theking of North Wales, or to the king of England, aslord paramount, which was finally determined, in 962,by the appearance of Edgar, with an armed force, atCaerlleon, who bound the princes to the payment of itto the English crown. In 9S7, the Danes landed on thecoast of this county, in which they committed greatravages, burning the churches of Llanilltyd and Llan-daf, with other religious edifices. As Morgan Hen ad-vanced in years, he resigned the government to his sons,of whom Owain and Ithel are expressly mentioned inthe Welsh annals, as reguli of the country during thelifetime of their father. GL A G LA at Ystrad Owain, and had a summer residence at a placecalled Ton Ithel Ddu, a few miles to the north ofBridgend: he survived Owain, and, about the year 990,his territories were attacked and ravaged without mercyby Edwin, son of Eineon, who, in alliance with Mere-dydd, sovereign of all Wales, and aided by parties ofSaxons and Danes, entered them from Carmarthenshirethrough Gower; but Hywel, the younger brother ofIthel, exasperated to heroic exertion by the depredationswhich these invaders every where committed, suddenlyraised the country in their rear, and, having assembledan immense multitude, armed with the first weaponsthey could obtain, fell upon them on their return, at aplace called Cors Eineon, in the parish of Llangyvelach,routed their forces with great slaughter, and recoveredthe plunder which they were carrying away.
