* Sinoe the calculations were made for the comparison of the electricalcharacteristics, the mechanical design ha3 been systematized in many ways. The general proportions of the magnetic and copper circuits were made uniformby the adoption of a core-section with dimensions 2.25 : 1, and a window withdimensions 2 : 1. These relations were chosen after investigating the effectof shape on the cost and reactance. A scaled drawing of the 30 K. V. A. sizeis included herewith^ Fig* 1 • The cost of material has been calculated onthe basis of iron at four cents and copper sixteen cents per pound. The areaof the window is determined by the ratio of the copper section to the sectionof the finished coil. The space-factor curve, Fig. 3 represents standardpractice in transformer insulation up to about 5,000 volts. For the lowtension side a space factor of .8 was adopted. 3etween coils, and betweencoils and iron, a .06 in. press-board insulation was allowed. Theeffective area of the laminated iron s
