Text Appearing Before Image:
e car, then turns and in a series of loops, under the seats, comes back to point a, where it crosses over to the other side, makes a turn at a and runs through the pipe p to the sameend X as before; thence it returns in a series of loops, makesthe return bend at end F, recrosses the car at h, and at h startsto return to the heater, entering the bottom of the coil at h.The arrows serve to make clear the course of the circulation. The pipe, in crossing the car, dips down below the floor at d,as shown, a T fitting being placed at t. At e is a drain cock todrain off the water when required. The car is represented asbeing broken in two, and the two parts brought close together. CIRCUI.ATING ACTION. 6. As the water in pipe R becomes heated, it expands andrises up into the expansion drum. The water in the pipe Pis cooler than that in R, consequently, it weighs more, and thusexerts a pressure on the water in pipe p, causing it to circu-late in the piping and reenter the coil A at its lower end.
Text Appearing After Image:
CAR HEATING. §13 Encountering the heated pipes in the fire, the cool water isagain heated, rises up through the coil and into the drum, andis again discharged out of the other pipe leading from thedrum to the radiating piping. In this way a constant upflowof hot water is maintained through the coils into the drum, and a downflow from the drum into the pipes in the car. Thiscontinuous circulation of the body of water distributes theheat throughout the car much more evenly than when ordinaryfire-stoves are used, as when the latter are used the heat remainsmore or less in the immediate neighborhood of the fire. The drum is filled through the funnel / and cock C. Thefunnel, after being filled, should be turned downwards so as notto collect dirt or cinders. The cock is also provided with adrip pipe. In order to secure a more rapid and certain circu-lation in the system, it is of importance to have the upflowpipe R as long as possible; therefore, the heater should beplaced as low, and the d
