In the upper openings of the T pieces tare screwed the pipes R, R^ leading to the expansion drum Z),while the lower T pieces t connect with the hot-water pipesthat run around the car. 46. The Car Piping.—The course of the steam is asfollows: Steam is taken from the train pipe P at the trainvalve V, which is situated underneath the car, passing thencethrough the pipe P to a point near the top of the heater *S, whereit receives a special T fitting that makes connections with twosteam valves v, each of which controls one of the f-inch pipecoils already mentioned as being inside the 2-inch coils A, A.From the upper side of the T pieces (, t run the hot-water risersR and R. These risers enter the expansion drum D. Hot-water outflow pipes p and p run from the expansion drum D.These pipes p, p, one to each coil, take a course right around thecar, as shown by the arrows, coming back to the bottom of thecoils in the heater ^S*, the connection being made with the 2-inch

CAR HEATING. § 13 pipes by means of the T pieces t\ t; v, on top of drnni, is thesafety vent to relieve excessive pressures. 47. Action of the Apparatus.—Water is contained inthe coils between the inner and the outer pipes, and is heatedby steam passing from the train pipe P through valve V intopipe P, and so to the inner coils. Steam circulates throughthe two small coils and passes out at the bottom into the drippipes i and i, and thence along to the steam traps T, 7under-neath the car; from these traps is drained off all the condensa-tion that comes to them from the two inner coils. It will be seen that this system of piping provides the powerof two Baker heaters with only one stove and one expansiondrum, and also that each side of the car can be controlledindependently of the other. In this manner the heat can bevery satisfactorily regulated, as in mild weather only one sideof the car need be heated, while in severe weather the doublecirculation can be called into service and bo
