he upper extremityof the pelvic cavity, corresponding with the brim, is the inlet, orsuperior strait ; the lower extremity is the outlet, or inferiorstrait. In consequence of the curvature of the sacrum and2 17 i8 PREGXAXCY. coccyx the pelvic cavity appears as a curved cylinder, slightlynarrowed toward the outlet. It is deepest behind and shallowestat the pubic symphysis. Its lateral wall is deep and vertical. It extends from the iliopectineal line to the end of the ischialtuberosity, and is mainly formed by the body of the ischiumwith small portions of the ilium and pubis. The anterior depthof the pelvis (height of the symphysis) is 4 cm. The lateraldepth is 9 cm. The posterior depth is 13 cm. The pelvic inlet is cordiform, with the notched base con-forming with the base of the sacrum and the rounded apexwith the pubes. The outlet, rather smaller than the inlet, whencompleted by the great sacrosciatic ligaments has the sameshape, with the notched base formed by the coccyx and the apex

Its fore part is the pubic arch, thebase of which extends between the ischial tuberosities ; and thesides are formed by the conjoined rami of the pubes and ischia. On each side of the outlet is the deep sacrosciatic notch, formedin front by the ischium, above by the ilium, and behind by thesacrum and coccyx. It is converted into the great and smallsciatic foramina by the sacrosciatic ligaments, which also sepa-rate them from the pelvic outlet. The pelvis of the female notonly differs from that of the male in accordance with the usualdifference in other parts of the skeleton, but also exhibits impor-tant modifications which relate to the sexual function. Thefemale pelvis is proportionately larger, but of more delicate con- THE ANATOMY OF THE PELVIS. 19 struction. It is proportionately, and often absolutely, of greaterbreadth, and is of less depth.
