Text Appearing Before Image:
f ascertaining the position of a foreign body is bystereoscopic radiography. In addition to this it is probably the best system toadopt in all cases. It enables us to see the part underexamination in its three dimensions—the skeleton standsout in relief and a foreign body is shown in its truerelationship to the bony points. The surgeon having seenthe state of affairs can with the greatest confidence gostraight to the proper place, even better than if he isgiven measurements which may or may not be quitecorrect. See Plate I. STEREOSCOPIC RADIOGRAPHY. 127 Not the least important feature of the method is itsextreme simplicity. The only extra pieces of apparatus required are aWheatstones stereoscope and a changing-box, whichlatter has already been described. This is placed under the part so that the centre of theplate and the area to be radiographed correspond. The X-ray tube is then adjusted over the same pointwith the arm of the tube-holder at right angles to the longaxis of the limb.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 48. Wheatstones Stereoscope. The first plate being in position in the changing boxthe clamp holding the tube arm is loosened and the tubemoved three centimetres to the right and secured. Theexposure is then made and the plate marked ~R andtaken to the dark room. Another fresh plate is broughtand put in place of the first one. The tube is now moved across to a correspondingdistance to the left of the middle line—six centimetres inall, and a second exposure made. This exposure may be longer or shorter than the otherwithout affecting the result, and is, in fact, an advantagewhen the question of exposure is in doubt. 128 TEXT-BOOK OF RADIOLOGY. The two plates are now developed, fixed and washed inthe usual way, and are then ready for examination. For this we require a Wheatstones stereoscope, asshown in Fig. 48. This consists of two of the semi-cylindrical or squareboxes for examining plates, so mounted that they can beraised or lowered and inclined at an angle, or even turnedhoriz
