s, at the level of thesea, where the maximum of heat corresponds to the minimum of latitudeand elevation, and thence proceed to the polar regions, where the minimumof heat corresponds to the maximum of latitude. It will be proper, at thesame time, to give the altitudes above the Ocean, of the places of observa-tion, and their proximity to, or remoteness from, seas, lakes, and mountains;which, as far as may be practicable and convenient, I shall do. A criticalexamination of the tables, will soon disclose to the reader, some embarrass-ing anomalies. He will see a lower mean temperature assigned to a place,than that of a place further north. This may sometimes be explained bydifference of altitude; but, in many instances, may be regarded as the evi-dence of inaccurate observation. Time only can be relied upon for the cor-rection of these errors; which are not pecijliar to meteorology, but neces-sarily belonfj to all the inductive sciences. PART II.)
