XLVI. bladder kfelf might be injured, were thedivHion of the cartilage not conductedwith caution: but with due attention tothefe points, and avoiding the total divi-sion of the foft parts at the under edgeof the bones, all rifk of hurting eitherthe bladder or urethra may be prevent-ed. On the divifion of the cartilage beingcompleted, the bones recede consider-ably from each other. To prevent anyconfequences that might enfue fromtheir feparating forcibly and fuddenly;the affirmants who have the charge ofthe thighs mould be defired to fupportthem, particularly towards the end of theoperation; and if a fufficient opening isnot gained in this manner, the thighsmay afterwards be flowly and graduallyfeparated. The child is now to be delivered inthe ufual way by the vagina; and thisbeing affe&ed, and the placenta removed,the bones fhould be immediately put to-gether, and retained as exactly as pofli- ble ILAXE. The fore does not require any-particular attention; in general it healsealily with light mild drefllngs; and forthe mofl part the union of the bones iscompleted in the courfe of the fifth orfixth week, The patient, however, mouldnot be allowed to walk, or to pat thebody into any pofture that might effectan alteration in the fltuation of the bones,till nine or ten weeks have elapfed. The only objection of importance thatoccurs to this operation is, the fmallfpace that is gained by it in that part ofthe pelvis where it is moll required.
