Plate 55.—Authors Position Finder. Sighting shadow of rod with flaoroscope as de-scribed in text. The three Instruction Plates of this instrument sufficiently teach how to securewith its aid an exact central field in the axis of the X-rays, and, when found, to locate thepart in this position for radiography. It will be seen also that the flat metal base makes asecure support for a glass-plate, placed, for instance, under a patient who is on a canvasstretcher. It prevents breakage, absorbs the rays, and is a valuable device.

Plate 56.—Diagnostic Field and Axis of Rays as shown by Authors Position Finderand Landmark. Having sighted the rod of the Position Finder and secured the focus removethe rod. Draw two diagonal lines across the light-proof envelope of the plate from corner tocorner and their intersection marks the centre of the film. The vertical dotted line occupiesthe place of the rod and is the axis of the rays, carrying down shadows to the centre withoutdivergence or distortion. As the rays form a c<me they have a circular field on the film, whichis shown by the ring. The slant of the side rays is shown by the diverging lines. With theseaids to accuracy all errors of position area voidable. See study in divergence and distortionin the text.
