e anterior wall of the urethra, the posterior beingabsent in this part; b, posterior, closed part of the urethra; d, hymen; e, opening in thesame. (From Winckel, after Mosengeil.) EPISPADIAS2 is the name for a condition in which there is a cleft inthe anterior wall of the urethra, which mostly is combined with a cleftin the anterior wall of the bladder (cvfrtnrrxio vesica). In the upperpart of the vulva, just below the symphysis pubis, appears the mucousmembrane of the open bladder (Fig. 101). There is no urethra. Theclitoris may be cleft. The urethra forms originally one organ with the bladder. Both area development of that part of the allantois which is situated inside ofthe foetus. Thus this cleavage is not a simple arrest of development, but is attributable to a deficiency of the anterior wall of the bladder,a- well a- to an arrest of development in the abdominal wall.1 Y-». under; tncadl^u, I tear. ■ E-i, on; (nrodifu, I tear. 266 MALFORMATIONS OF THF FEMALE GENITALS. Text Appearing After Image:
Epispadias: a, fissure in the bladder; b, labium majus; c, clitoris; d. labium minus; e, hymen;/, vaginal entrance. (From Winckel, after Kleinwachter.) The clitoris has been found cleft, without any cleavage of the urethraor bladder, but combined with a cleft symphysis and a deficiency in theabdominal wall above the bladder. Other Congenital Abnormities. The clitoris may be absent, rudimentary, or, on the other hand, verymuch enlarged. Hyrtl states that in some African tribes the clitorishangs down, covering the rima pudendi as a valve, and that the peoplefasten it with a ring to the perineum as a protection for virginity. Inhermaphrodites it often becomes as large as a penis of moderate dimen-sions. Bainbridge found in a woman whom he assisted in labor a cli-toris about five inches long and of the diameter of a quiescent penis ofan adult, to which organ it became still more like by the presence of agroove behind the glans. At a later examination it was found measur-ing three inches i
