mesticanimals raised, and their value stands in theorder named. The forest area is 26,320square miles, of which seventy per cent ispine, so, naturally, the timber trade is exten-sive. The coast line, exclusive of fjords andbays, is 3,018 miles, and most of it is markedby magnificent cliffs, whose steep sides seemto forbid entrance to the land they protectfrom all outlying forces. Numberless littleislandsliealongtheshores, and into the main-land, like flooded valleys, extend the narrowfjords. With all this sea coast, naturally thefisheries are extensive, over 100,000 personsbeing employed. The chief varieties of fishtaken are cod, herring, mackerel, salmon,sea-trout, and lobsters. The mining indus-tries, which might be expected to be extensivein so mountainous a country, are unimpor-tant, the chief minerals produced being sil-ver, copper, pyrites, apatite, and feldspar.Norway has only about twelve hundredmiles of railroads and on account of themountainous nature of the country the cost

The commander of our ship.Captain Hiortdahl, is a fine looking, youngNorwegian; tall, with light hair, blue eyes,and a strong, handsome face. I have beentold he commanded a Japanese ship duringthe late Russian-Japanese War. Even so, hecannot now be past forty years of age. Sunday, June 29.We had a sacred concert this afternoon,given by a Choir from St. Olafs College,Northfield, Minn. The members of thechoir, nearly fifty in number and of whomtwo-thirds are young women, have contrib-uted fifty dollars apiece to a common fundand it is expected that the rest of the ex-penses
