Title |
A stamped copper alloy timble, probably dating to the 15th/ 16th century AD. |
||
Description |
English: A probable stamped copper alloy thimble (diameter at tip: 15mm; diameter at base: 24.1mm; thickness: 0.8mm; weight: 4.93g) with irregular drilled and rounded holes around the outer sides and leading up and including the rounded tip. Each incised hole has roughly the same diameter of 1.2mm. Additionally, there is a slight rim around the base of the artefact. The inside of the thimble is not decorated. The artefact is in a poor and worn condition with a large amount of corrosion in some areas, particularly patches of bronze disease down the sides and nearer the rimmed base. Some domed type thimbles were made for light duty and others, mostly larger with thicker sides, for heavy duty and the size of the holes varies accordingly. Domed type thimbles are found in Britain in contexts from about 1350 AD. This example probably dates from the 15th/ 16th century AD. |
