There was a certain Eussian Lieutenant-ColonelMatoriroff, who was very well known by reputation tothe Japanese Intelligence Bureau, owing to his havingtravelled a great deal in Northern Korea for thepurpose of spying out the land before the outbreakof the war. On May 10th, when the headquarters of the FirstArmy were still at Antung, a report came in to saythat the town of Anju was surrounded by the enemy.At this very period the line of communication of theFirst Army was in the act of being shifted from Korea,the intention being that it should have its base atAntung, whilst the old line would be handed
