Title
A single view of a probable roman spindle whorl.
Description
English: Probable spindle whorl made of cast lead alloy. The dating of lead spindle whorls is difficult due to the long period of time over which they were used, according to Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide, Version 1.1; August 2001) lead spindle whorls have been found in both Roman and Medieval contexts (Geake 2001, 66). This object could therefore date to any time between the 1st century AD and the 16th century AD.

In plan the object is sub-circular while in section the object is biconical. The object has a central perforation which is roughly sub-circular in plan. The object is heavily abraded, with pitting evident on all surfaces. Only patchy traces of the original patina remain. The object is blue grey in colour.

The measurement of the object is 28.2mm in diameter, 10.8mm at its thickest point and the central perforation is 10.5mm in diameter. The weight of the object is 24.8g.
