The unlicensed castlesRestoration that the turbulent nobles had built during theof order. anarchy of Stephens reign (1118 is the number given) were dismantled. The barons were forced to desistfrom tyranny and were reduced to obedience. In this workof organizing and repairing, the king was ably assisted byThomas Becket, a young Norman of a tradesmans family,whom he had made his chancellor.1
