An effigy of a sheep hanging over a shop doorway in Salisbury, UK

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Catherine Lovibond bought these premises in 1919, she was the daughter of Joseph Lovibond, three time mayor of Salisbury.

Catherine trained as a designer and became interested in spinning and weaving. She taught local women the skills and gradually built up a business producing goods that were exhibited in the Albert Hall. She formed Stonehenge Woollen Industries which was originally at Lake House and later in Stratford sub Castle. When her father died retail outlets were established in 4 places including 51 High Street, Salisbury. At this time the original sheep was installed over the shop. It is adapted from the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece founded by the Duke of Burgundy in 1430 and has come to represent wool sellers and the wool trade. When Catherine died, by then she was Lady Hedley, the business continued until 1959 when the premises were taken over by the SPCK bookshop. The sheep remained over the doorway but by 2018 it had deteriorated beyond repair and was replaced by this modern model.
