Title |
A replica German WWI 2nd class Iron Cross |
||
Description |
English: A modern reproduction of a German First World War 2nd class Eiserne Kreuz or 'Iron Cross' medal, probably of tin or light pewter. Orignals date 1914-1918, this example dating uncertain but likely post WWI to the present day.
The medal takes the form of a Teutonic Cross or 'cross pattée', with two silver rims, the internal one raised creating a rim encompassing a large black internal cross. The top arm has a small suspension loop.Each side shares the same overall cross design but differ when it comes to decoration of the centre andtheir inscriptions. The front of the medal has a crown at the pinnacle of the top arm,above a centralcapital W (forWilhelm II) and the year 1914 (date of outbreak of the conflict) at the bottom. The reverse of the medal has a crown at the pinnacle of the top arm (as the front), a central device of an oak leaf sprig, with a leave pointing outwards from the centre along each arm and the year 1813 (date of the first Prussian issues of the Iron Cross) on the bottom arm. The medal is mostly complete with some mild abrasion around the outside, the silvery exposed tin/pewter bands are showing signs of corrosion, with patches of brown/white patination, the black enamel paint of the central cross remains mostly in good condition although it has become delicate and flaky in some places. Measurements: 43.3mm high, 41.02mm wide, 3.58mm thick and 13.86g in weight. |
