Suddenly the crowdon an upper balcony of a stately house tothe left was seen to sway violently; and amoment later a beautiful young girl, tearsstreaming from her eyes, leant far out overthe rail, and waved a crudely made OldGlory over the ragged ranks below. For abreath we were struck dumb by this appari-tion. Then every hat came off; and for thefirst time that day we split the heavens witha cheer,— lustily and long. The outbreakwas infectious, and from every side the clamorswelled and burst till it seemed as if the uni-verse had vaulted into mad tumult at thetouch of a girls hand.
