gingly difficult. He may, how-ever, obtain great assistance in acquiring the right habit of thought bysystematically writing down each sign as it is perceived, and by groupingwith it the other signs belonging to the same region. This he may do bymeans of short descriptions; or, better still, he may employ symbols torepresent the various sounds, etc., and may mark them directly on thepatients body, or may fill them in on blank diagrams of the thorax andabdomen, and thus obtain a complete and vivid picture of the results ofthe examination of each separate region. The practical value of thismethod, both as an aid to the beginner and as an easy and accurate meansfor preserving records, has been widely recognized, and numerous symbolshave been devised to represent graphically the various physical signs. Those suggested by Wyllie, of Edinburgh, and by Sahli, of Bern, areamong the best. Many of the symbols used in the following pages willbe recognized as borrowed from the above-named authors.

Superficial dillness (also called absolute dul-ness) is alone indicated in the following illustrations. As has been stated, the personal equation enters so largely into the determination of theextent of deep (relative) dulness that it is scarcely possible to make anypositive statements in regard to the areas over which it is obtained inhealth and in disease. Absolute dulness is, on the other hand, easilyrecognized, and it is, therefore, far better that the student first becomethoroughly familiar with this, about which there can be little or no ques-tion, before being taught what, in the case of relative dulness, is after allmerely the expression of the individual skill and acuteness of ear of theinstructor. With a clear picture of the areas of superficial dulness once
