Title
A pair of very similar gilded copper alloy mounts decorated with a human mask motif. Drawin: Frank Basford
Description
English: A pair of complete and almost identical gilded copper alloy mounts of Post-Medieval, probably seventeenth century date. The dimensions of each mount are length 41mm, width 19mm and about 2mm thick. Weight 6.67g/6.91g.

Each mount is pear-shaped in plan (pointed end at the bottom) with a finial at the top and a terminal at the bottom. Moulded decoration at the front is in the form of a plain border enclosing a human mask. The mask has a severe expression and has a distinctive fringe divided into seven segments, which perhaps represent curls. Just above the head are three conjoined raised circular lobes. One of these lobes is situated directly above the centre of the head. The other two lobes extend beyond the plain border. Attached to these lobes is a small finial decorated with three grooves. The bottom of the mount has a three-pointed splayed terminal. The reverse of each mount is flat and plain and has two integral spikes which are about 12mm in length and sub-circular in cross-section. Both of the mounts are in a stable condition.
