I at last found that I was approaching Karewia,a German camp, and when the supposed site wasshown me, decided on ascending the hills andforming a camp. The people were peculiarly shy,and I had great difficulty in finding any one toact as guide, but after some trouble, I found afairly good spot on the left bank of the Butaguriver. The reason of this canprobably be best explained as an effect of theextremely sudden rise of the mountain and themanner in which the ridges jut out from themain mass, so that there is a sheer precipitousascent to about 9,000 feet, from which long,na
