Text Appearing Before Image:
eys onthe east side of Ruwenzori (speaking from personalknowledge only) are the Nyamwamba, the Mubuku, the Wimi, and the Yeria. The way to the latterlies through the very valuable Butanuka districtwhich is only distant 30 miles from the AlbertEdward. The rich district about Butindi andKasagamas is about a days march farther on fromButanuka, but I should consider the best roadwould probably lie along the Msonje river, leavingButanuka on the left. It is possible that goodscould be conveyed by the Mpango to a point notfar from Kasagamas, but this is a matter on whichI cannot speak. By the route I suggest, one couldconvey a large body of men, even Europeans, fromthe Albert Edward to the Albert without muchdifficulty. Embarking on the Albert Edward, theycould probably reach Kaihuras in one day, wherea large depot of beans, cattle, and poultry couldbe got together; from there they could proceed ondo the highest navigable point of the Durro andYeria, where a similar depot could be established

hi Ph o w 3CM OD WAHIMA, WAKONDJA, AND SUAHILIS. 121 from Butanuka, Wimi, and Yeria. From this adays march would bring them to within measur-able distance, at any rate, of Butindi, and fromthis point it is probably only 50 miles to theAlbert Nyanza, the route lying through well-cul-tivated and fertile country. Thus to reach bythis route the north end of the Albert Nyanza isabout seven days march from the Albert EdwardNyanza, and probably only fourteen days marchfrom the Kagera river. Cattle appear to be very easily kept over thewhole country around the Albert and AlbertEdward Nyanzas; those which I saw being all inthe very best condition. To administer the whole district of Kuwenzoriwould neither be expensive nor difficult. It willbe seen from the preceding remarks that the fertileand most promising part of the country is withinthe hills. It is also advisable that there should bea station within easy distance of, but not too near,Kasagamas capital, and it is above all thingsessential
