et from thesouthern front of the great hotel of which it is an essential part andfeature. Its one high story, whose vast even floor is a few feetbelow the level of the hotels main floor, comprises all of the utilitiesthat are offered, all of the private elegances that are provided in thescattered, small, isolated and, usually, stuffy, small apartments com-monly provided by other great hotels. From the open brink of thehotel-lobby floor, the eye ranges above the stage upon which theorchestra will sit, across the fine perspective to the southern windowsof The Lounge and thence across the descending landscape to wherethe Yellowstone Falls, itself masked by an intervening pine wood,roars and thunders in its final descent into the most astoundinglypicturesque gorge in the world. The whole central floor-space of The Lounge is at once a vastballroom, promenade, auditorium or theatorium. YELLOWSTONE PARK 13 the continuous walls of plate-glass by day, and by two thousand elec-tric lights by night, writing-desks and tea-tables, easy-chairs, divans,footstools and rugs will offer to the guests the perfection of privacywith accessibility, comfort with elegance, aloofness with sociability, inexactly that degree which each guest of the hotel may choose for him-self. The music, the spectacle of the dancers and promenaders, thestir and interest of the summer-night throng, will become unobtrusive,impersonal, an impression rather than an interruption, in the bigness,the roominess, the cosy out-of-doorness which are peculiarly char-acteristic to this most extraordinary apartment.
