English: A memorial in the old graveyard at Moffat. Dedicated to the driver of a mail coach, who along with the guard James McGeorge, perished in a snow storm to the northeast of Moffat in 1831. The inscription reads:-
IN MEMORY OF JOHN GOODFELLOW, driver of the Edinburgh Mail Coach who perished on Erick Stane in a Snow Storm, on 1st February 1831, in kindly assisting his fellow sufferer the Guard, to carry forward the Mail Bags Erected by Subscription in 1835
Sacred To the MEMORY of JAMES McGEORGE Guard of the Dumfries and Edinburgh Royal Mail who unfortunately perished at the age of 47 near Tweedshaws after the most strenuous exertions in the performance of his duty during that memorable Snow storm 1st February 1831 Alfo GEORGE McGeorge his son and succefsor as Mail Guard who died at Dumfries 11th June 1839 in the 34 year of his age A monument to commemorate this event can be seen by the A701 north of the Devil's Beef Tub 719804. |
