ra had determined to removethe Monterey establishment, and wherehe intended, thereafter, to make the head-quarters of all the missions of California.At first the buildings were constructed oftimber, which was abundant in the vicinity;the present stone church, having been erectedat a later period, the date of which is un-known. It is believed, however, that thepresent structure occupies the same spot asthe original wooden structure, under whichfour Fathers, Crespi and Serra, Lopez andLasuen, were buried. In fact their graveswere formally located by proper excavations,which Father Casanova, present pastor ofMonterey, caused to be made, in the presenceof many witnesses, on July 3, 1882. How-ever, the present edifice is much larger thanthat which it displaced, being 165 feet inlength, inside measurements, by twenty-ninefeet in width, and sixty-two feet from thefloor to the top of the arched roof;. whereasthe former building, according to the recordof Father Palou, was only thirty varas in

The buildings of most of the missions wereconstructed, as nearly as possible, on a gen-eral, uniform plan, the church being built inthe center, of stone or adobe and roofed withtile. Near by were the residences of thepriests, the storehouses for the storage ofgrain, wine and oil, and shops for the black-smiths and for the soap-makers, and at someof the establishments for wine and oil presses,etc. In the larger missions, like those of SanGabriel, San Fernando, etc., where eventuallylarge vineyards and olive orchards wereplanted, and where the neophytes were verynumerous, the missions were laid out on anextensive scale.
