Title
a medieval papal bulla of Nicholas III
Description
English: A medieval, cast lead papal bulla of Pope Nicholas III (1277-1280). The obverse carries the name of the pope in three lines, N[I]CO/L[A]VS/PP III, and the reverse has the usual portraits of saints Peter and Paul beneath the letters SPA SPE, though these letters are quite worn and not all visible. There is a prominent, vertical ridge running down the centre of both the obverse and reverse, which would have encased the attachment cord. On the obverse, this ridge obscures some of the the lettering. The bulla has a dark cream patina. It is oval in shape, being 38.7mm long, 35.1mm wide and 5.7mm thick. It weighs 34.51gm.
