Title |
A medieval lead ampulla |
||
Description |
English: A cast lead or lead alloy ampulla. The ampulla is scalloped shaped with a pair of loops at the neck for suspension. One of the loops is broken. The upper surface of the ampulla has moulded decoration in the form of vertical, curving ribs intended to represent the scallop shell. The underside is very worn but appears to be decorated with a series of marginal ribs. The ampulla measures 45mm in length, a maximum of 32mm in width and is 10mm thick.
The scallop was the emblem of the apostle St James the Greater. From the beginning of the twelfth century it was also the souvenir worn by pilgrims to his shrine at Compostela. However, as the scallop become a widely known pilgrim's sign, it came not only to stand for St James but as a generic symbol of pilgrimage. Therefore, it is unlikely that this ampulla came from Compostela. |
