Title
A medieval copper alloy mirror case
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Medieval mirror case. This object represents one half of the original mirror case. It is circular in plan with a 90 degree down turned flanged rim that runs around its circumference. To the rear of the case is a double pin bar lug, that would have accommodated the single lug of the lower case and allowed it to hinge. Opposite this at the front of the case is small pointed knop. The top face of the mirror case is decorated with a crude punched design. Two opposing rows of small punched triangles form a central line (running from between the pin bar lugs). To either side is a similar line, also formed from opposing punched triangles, that prominently peaks in the centre, so that each opposing peak reaches the edge of the circular case. This in effect creates an overall, crude design of a cross. The reverse of the case is plain. Traces of a white cement or adhesive can be seen, which would have held the glass within the case. Similar examples of mirror cases can be seen in Egan and Pritchard, 1991, Dress Accessories.
