Title |
a medieval buckle with integral buckle plate |
||
Description |
English: A medieval, cast copper alloy buckle with integral buckle plate, dating from 1250-1350AD. The buckle frame is oval and thicker on the outer edge, which has a pin groove in the centre. The plate tapers slightly from the inner edge of the frame to a blunt, squared-off end. Two copper alloy rivets remain in place in the centre of the plate and there is a depression close to the buckle frame that either held a third rivet, or was the hole where the pin was attached. These three holes are arranged in a straight line down the centre of the plate. The pin is missing. There are small traces of gilding on the plate; the buckle is otherwise quite corroded and displays a rough, light green patina. It is 45.7mm long, 21.4mm wide and 8mm thick. It weighs 7.95gm.
A similar buckle is illustrated in Egan & Pritchard, Dress Accessories, 1150-1350, page 79, number 321. |
