By the thirteenth cent-ury, however, they were established inZealand and their estates were among themost important on those flat islands whichoffered none of the picturesque sites formediasval castles afforded in German val-leys. Jacqueline possessed a hunting seat inZealand,—Ostende, in the neighbourhood ofGoes. This had been a favourite town ofCount William VI. To him it owed its firstcharter, and his daughter had added to itsmunicipal privileges when she received herfirst homage in 1417. In return, the townhad presented her with a box containing sixhundred gold pieces. As the story goes, when the Countesswas in residence at Ostende shortly afterher abdication, she honoured the citizens ofGoes by her presence at one of the archeryfestivals.
