At thesame time, there are considerable differences in the several partsof the Dominion, due to latitude, elevation above the sea, thelocal configuration of the country, the prevailing winds, &c. Themean annual temperature of Auckland is given as 59 degrees, andthat of Dunedin, which is 13 degrees further south, as 50, adifference of 9 degrees, due to the difference in latitude. Thetemperature at WeUington, situated about half way between theother two stations, is given as 55. The difference between theeast and west coasts is small, and those between the mean maximaand minima are much smaller than those prevaihng in England. The rainfall seems to be much affected by a succession ofcyclones travelling from west to east. Nearly all parts of the CLIMATE. 257 country receive a supply of rain sufi&cient for agricultural purposes.Droughts of any severity are unknown. Only in parts of Canter- FiG. 12.

Easlt Mean Annual Rainfall, in inches. bury plain and in central Otago is the rainfall occasionally insuffi-cient to ensure a good yield from the crops. The actual amountof rainfall differs considerably. It is heaviest on the west coast 258 FORESTRY IN NEW ZEALAND. of South Island, where it rises in some of the mountain valleys,to 200 inches and more. After the crest of the range has beenpassed, the rainfall rapidly diminishes to less than 30 inches nearthe east coast. In central Otago, a certain area receives only 15to 20 inches. In North Island the rainfall is more equally distri-buted, the greater portion having a fall of between 50 and 70inches. Near the great volcanoes it is much heavier. On thewhole, there can be no doubt that the climate of New Zealand isof a decidedly favourable character. 3. Vegetation. The general character of the indigenous vegetation is distinctlysemi-tropical, and the forest in particular is almost impenetrablein its native state, owing to the large numbe
