es to the escapedrain at their lower ends; 24 gallons of water per minute are admittedto each trough, and the average temperature of the water is 52°. Atthe head of each hatching-trough, 2 inches above the surface of thewater, is placed a tin aerator, 10 inches by 4 inches by 1J inches, thebottom only being perforated; 4 inches from the lower end of eachtrough a retaining-screen is placed at an angle. Between the screenand the end there is a 2-inch hole in the bottom stopped with a plugwhich projects above the surface of the water. In cleaning the troughthis plug is removed, the increased flow of water causing a strongcurrent through the entire length of the trough, which has a capacityof 200,000 eggs contained in five trays or baskets. When the eggs reach the hatchery they are washed, measured, andplaced in the hatching baskets or trays, 40,000 being placed in the16-mch and 25,000 in the 12-mch trays. They are 23 inches Jong, 15A inches wide at top,15 inches at bottom, and 6 inches deep. When placed in the hatching-trough the wooden frame of the basket rests on the edge of the trough. Two division plates of galvanized iron are placed in the hatching-trough just above each basket. The first one rests on the bottomand extends to within an inch of the surface of the water; the second isplaced half an inch below the first one, and extends from the top of thebox to within an inch of the bottom. This causes an upward current ofwater to pass through the eggs, which, however, is not strong enoughto move them. From the second to the tenth day the eggs are washed and the deadeggs are picked out, but from the tenth to the fifteenth day they arenot handled in any manner, no matter how much sediment may coverthem.
