Summary
[edit]DescriptionA long row of posts - geograph.org.uk - 1034442.jpg |
English: A long row of posts. All that remains of the wooden revetment erected along this section of coastline to protect beach and cliff face beyond - a long row of battered posts with nothing much in between to break the power of the waves. Lengths of entangled ropes and fishing nets, deposited here by the waves, can often be found adorning this bare skeleton. See also > 1034438.
Wave action is undermining the cliff face and the sea is eating away at the layer of dark clay which forms the cliff base - crumbling and eventually toppling onto the beach. The layers above are slipping downwards, taking all vegetation with them. The exposed cliff face is easy prey for wind and weather > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1034424. Coastal erosion in the vicinity has been estimated at an approximate rate of one metre/year, which accounts for the loss of a strip of land approximately two kilometres wide since the Roman invasion in 43 CE, resulting in the disappearance into the sea of several medieval villages. |
