a thousandmiles. Troy is in a singularly fortunate situation. Eastwardis the fertile slope from the Berkshire hills to the Hudson.South is the Hudson valley. West the Mohawk makesthe land productive for the agriculturist. North is a richregion of substantial farms and water powers for manu-facturing. No city in the east has such a fine soil in itsimmediate neighborhood. It is therefore natural thatthe purchase and sale of farm produce offers a large andsteady vocation for many of Troys citizens. Some ofthis is used in the city but much is sent to distant sectionsof the state. All this fertile territory is open to easyaccess by trolley lines and steam railroads. Further tothe north are the Adirondacks, the pleasure ground ofthe whole country. Timber land offers unusual oppor-tunity for lumber business, paper making and allmanufactures that require wood. Beneath the soil inthe North Woods lie some of the greatest iron depositsin the world, hardly touched but certainly soon to betapped.
