Summary
[edit]DescriptionA lichen - Porpidia cinereoatra - geograph.org.uk - 1217399.jpg |
English: A lichen - Porpidia cinereoatra. I found a few examples of this lichen growing close to a route (following the line of an old drove road) between the Auchenreoch Muir cist and the Hill of Standing Stones (1213920, 1009890).
This specimen is growing on a west-facing rock surface, and has a hard and fairly thick white crust. The grey spore-producing disks (apothecia) are quite large, the larger ones visible in this image measuring about 2 mm across. The discs are convex, and some are partially sunken into the crust. They also have a "bloom" like that of a peach. This species is said to be common on exposed acid rocks in upland and coastal areas; the elevation here is about 250 m, and the rock is in an exposed location on open heathland. Note the rust-red colouration in the lower right corner of the image, possibly indicating a high iron content. |
