Summary
[edit]DescriptionA lichen - Cladonia subcervicornis - geograph.org.uk - 1260398.jpg |
English: A lichen - Cladonia subcervicornis. Many lichen species in the genus Cladonia have a so-called "primary thallus" of leafy scales and a "secondary thallus" of stalk-like structures called podetia. This is best explained using a visual example: 1190489.
However, a few Cladonia species consist mainly of the leafy scales, never (or only rarely) having podetia. This is an example of such a species. C. subcervicornis is "very common on acid soil or in small soil pockets and cracks on siliceous rocks in well-lit, rocky, coastal and upland areas" [Frank S. Dobson, "Lichens – An Illustrated Guide to the British and Irish Species"]. The example shown here is growing on a rock outcrop in a large clearing on a fairly steep hillside. This suitably well-lit upland habitat is shown here: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1258800 |
