| Description |
English: A lichen - Buellia aethalea This lichen species was growing on a boulder on the beach; it occurred in small patches, like those shown here, little more than a centimetre across. These patches are divided up into much smaller areas by a pattern of cracks (like crazy-paving), and numerous tiny black spore-producing discs are also present on the surface; however, these details are only clearly visible through a hand-lens, although the black discs are visible here as a speckling of the lichen's surface. The photo also shows a dark line around each lichen; this is the prothallus, and it contains no algal cells.
This species is "frequent on well-lit siliceous rocks" [Frank S. Dobson, in "Lichens - An Illustrated Guide to the British and Irish Species]; the examples in this photo were indeed found on the sunlit side of the boulder, and the large quartz grains that are visible here show the rock to be silica-rich. |
