A hot-air balloon sails over the headland and is rescued by a passing ship as it collapses.

In March 1882 Mr. Joseph Simmons and a Colonel Brine attempted to cross the English Channel on 4th March 1882 from Canterbury to France. They flew across Dover and eight miles off Calais the wind veered and they realised they would be drifting off to the North Sea instead. Simmons decided to ditch in the Channel where, fortunately, they were rescued by a passing packet steamer (the mail packet Foam) and the balloon was recovered.
