Nostrils immediately before the eye.The maxillary bone (mystache) extends scarcely beyond thehindmost margin of the eye; two pairs of teeth on the vomer,four pairs on the tongue. Mr. Mascall observed (Loudons Mag. Nat. Hist., vol. viii, A.D. 1835,) that in the exampleshe met with, the bones of the gill-membranes were not inequal numbers on both sides. Dr. Gunther remarks thatnearly all these bones are exposed to sight in a side view ofthe fish. The origin of the Dorsal fin is exactly in themiddle between the snout and root of the caudal; the raystwelve in number, the first very short, fourth and fifth longest.Anal fin with twelve rays, its origin exactly in the middlebetween the root of the caudal and that of the outer ventralray; the first ray very small, the five first rays obscured bybeing enclosed in a common membrane, the fourth longest,fifth branched.
