aris merchants ten eggs of this bird: six of them likethe drawing, three darker, and one lighter. Greatdiameter nineteen to twenty-one millemetres, smalldiameter fourteen or fifteen. The male bird sent me by M. E. Verreaux has allthe upper parts of the body a rich chesnut brown,darkest on the wing primaries and the tail. The throatis white, shading ofi to ash grey on the belly and toolive brown on the flanks and under tail coverts, thelatter being tipped with white. The wings are short. 96 CETTls WARBLER, only just covering tlie rump. Beak and feet lightbrown; iris nut brown. The female has the colours slightly paler than themale, but they are difficult to distinguish, except bysize. Young before the first moult are, according toDegland, of a darker brown than the adult. My figure is from specimens sent me by M. E.Verreaux. Figured also by Bufibn, pi. enl. 655, underthe name of Bouscarle de Provence; M. Roux, Ornith.Prov., pi. 212; Z.
