es. By this cap-ture the English added to their military supplies, and seriouslylessened the strength of the enemy. Shortly after, the numberof the English fleet was considerably augmented by the arrivalof several men-of-war. A combined attack by sea and landwas now determined on, and fixed for the 29th of June. Be-fore the arrival of the appointed time, however, the enemydesired a cessation of hostilities; and, on the 28th of June,after a siege of forty-nine days, the city of Louisburg andthe Island of Cape Breton were surrendered to his Britannicmajesty. 72. Thus successfully terminated a daring expedition, whichhad been undertaken without the knowledge of the mothercountry. The acquisition of the fortress of Louisburg was asuseful and important to the colonies, and to the British empire,as its reduction was surprising to that empire and mortifying tothe court of France. Besides the stores and prizes which fellinto the hands of the English, — estimated at little less than a N,°3.

The capture of Louisburg roused the court of France torevenge. Under the Duke DAnville, a nobleman of great cour-age, an armament was despatched to America, in 1746, consist-ing of forty ships-of-war, fifty-six transports, with three thou-sand five hundred men, and forty thousand stands of arms forthe use of the French and Indians in Canada. The object ofthis expedition was to recover possession of Cape Breton, and toattack the colonies. But several ships of this formidable Frenchfleet were damaged by storms; others were lost, and one forcedto return to Brest, on account of a malignant disease among hercrew. Two or three only of the ships, with a few of the trans-ports, arrived at Chebucto, now Halifax. Here the admiraldied, through mortification, or, as some say, by poison.
