Apparently their movement wasmade under cover of successive deployments of an infantry rear-guard, placed in a favourable position, which the pursuingcavalry dared not attack. And when the head of WilliamStewarts division came up, the enemy on each occasion retiredbehind a second rear-guard, placed a few miles back. Hence ifthe retreat was slow and difficult, the pursuit was always checkedtill the leading infantry had arrived and begun to deploy—when the enemy absconded. The only incident recorded fromthis fatiguing series of operations is the story given by Napierof the daring ride of Captain William Light1.
